Magnetic Money Making
Monetize, Website Content September 26th, 2007The goal of any webmaster is to try and make money from their internet business pursuits. Now, it may not be the case that every webmaster starts out this way but certainly there are many that started in this business because of its highly lucrative promises and its ease of entry. This is perfectly fine but what I’d like to talk about in this article is the common misconception that more advertising equals more money.
It is often the case that webmasters are fooled into thinking that by doubling the amount of advertising on their site they can cause a doubling of the amount of revenue generated by the site. If this were the case then a simply site that earns $1 per month could be made into a massively profitable site by simply loading the site with a ton of advertising. Certainly this isn’t the case, so what then is the secret to more profitable websites?
Well, let me first begin by explaining yet another reason why increased advertising is a bad idea and why it seldom works to dramatically increase the profitability of a website. The reason is that traffic is comprised of real people that have real problems and are looking for real solutions. Simply giving them a thin piece of content and twenty thousand ads for products they couldn’t care less about you are degrading their experience on your site.
As a webmaster you need to be very concerned about your visitor’s experiences on your site. This is twofold. Firstly, a positive experience will entice the visitor to stay on your site longer, in which case they are exposed to your advertising for a longer period of time, increasing the likely hood that they purchase and secondly they will view your site as a useful resource and not only return to your site again but also recommend that other people looking for the same information visit your site thereby increasing your traffic.
Now, the practice of writing powerful and high quality content with minimal advertising in the hopes of letting customers come to you is a practice that I like to call Magnetic Money Making. The idea is that by giving your visitors all of the information they are looking for they will not only be more receptive towards advertising attempts but they will practically ask for you to give the money.
This is also seen in the area of email marketing and list building. Rather than sending your list a new offer each and every day (if you were to do this your list would become useless pretty quickly, suffering from burnout) you should instead provide very useful, in depth content on a regular basis and then when you finally do promote some sort of product your list will not only read your promotion but will trip over themselves trying to give you their money.
In general, if you treat your visitors or list members well then they will wish to return the favor and try to please you by giving you there money. Also, if you give them high quality content for free then they will be very curious to see just how good the stuff is that they have to pay for, making them even more likely to buy. Just make sure not to disappoint them.
