Linking To The Competition
Marketing & Advertising, Website Content September 20th, 2007Usually, as webmasters and as entrepreneurs, we are always interested in trying to beat out our competition in any way that we can in order to get the upper hand and become more successful. However, is this really a sound strategy? Is it possible that being on friendly terms with the competition is perhaps more profitable? Let’s examine this question.
It is standard practice in business to try and out do the competition and to view them as the money but this style of thinking is like trying to paint the world black and white, it rarely ever works in practice. In fact, most of the time your “competition” isn’t really offering a replacement product to yours but rather a similar product that could possibly enhance your product.
In fact, it is virtually always the case that a number of your competitors actually have products that compliment yours nicely and certainly when this is the case it is a much better idea to try and make deal with these entities rather than try to snub them and beat them out of customers.
For example, if you have a dog training product that mainly focuses on teaching a dog to do tricks and you have a competitor that has a product that is design to teach dogs basic obedience then the two products would work very well together and so it would be much more beneficial for you to make a deal with this competitor instead of trying to beat them out of the market.
If you then approached your competitor and offered some sort of mutual promotion deal with affiliate commissions then this would result in an increase in revenue for both partners since it is likely that a number of your customers are interested in the obedience product and by sending them there you would make an affiliate commission. Also, your competitor’s buyers would likely be interested in your product which would result in more sales for you.
This strategy works well for content site owners as well and is not only limited to webmasters that are selling a product. If you have a content site on one subject and you find a competitor that runs a content site on a related subject it is likely very profitable and beneficial to both of you to link to one another.
Not only will you be sharing any page rank that you’ve acquired but also, any visitor to your site that is actually interested in your competitors information will happily move along and any visitor to your competitors site that is looking for information that you have will come to your site, thus both of you are getting more traffic and making your existing traffic much happier.
As you can see, there are a number of benefits in forming relationships with your competitors rather than trying to beat them all the time so I suggest you try and make partnerships that result in both partners becoming much more successful and ultimately resulting in very lucrative future business ventures.
