I’m certain that most webmasters, at one point or another, considered using paid advertising in order to get more traffic to their site and increase their profit. The problem is that these same people often become so blindsided by their own product that they ignore some of the most basic principles behind effective advertising.

First, before I get too deep in this subject, I’d like to explain to you why you are a product creator, even if you think you aren’t. If you are a webmaster then you have created a product of some sort. Now, sometimes this is very apparent as you may have written an ebook or created some other traditional infoproduct that you are selling on your website.

However, webmasters that own content rich websites that generate income via advertising are also product creators. The difference is that the product in this case is the website itself. You have created an informational resource for your prospects and what you want is for them to continue to come back to your site and bring more of their friends with them. This makes you a product creator.

As a product creator it is very easy to become so enamored by your product that you fail to understand that people aren’t looking for your product in particular but rather something related. This sort of short sightedness tends to crop up and cause problems when it comes time to write advertisements for your product.

For example, many webmasters feel that it is most appropriate explain to people the benefits or features of their product in the short amount of space given to you in most classified style advertisements such as Google Adwords. The problem is that when you do this you are implicitly assuming that your prospect is looking for your product and wishes to be impressed by the wonderful features that your product provides.

This isn’t the case, however. Instead it is much more likely that the prospect is search for information related to your product and so when you write your advertising about the many benefits of your product you fail to grab the reader’s attention. In fact, most of us have become blind to this sort of advertising since we are exposed to it so often throughout our day and because it is so very seldom applicable to what it is that we want.

The way to solve this is to understand what it is that the prospect is looking for and then to grab their attention by making mention that their questions will be answered at your site.

For example, if you were writing an ad for a dog training product then rather than touting the benefits of your system, you should rather target the specific question being asked in the search term and imply that the prospect can find the answer to their question by visiting your site.

Keeping in mind the needs of your prospects based on the information that they are looking for will allow your advertisements to be much more effect and as such will draw much more traffic to your site.
