A retake on directories being past their prime
Marketing & Advertising, Site/Product Reviews June 2nd, 2007When we spoke about directories being past their prime, there were some upset webmasters who approached us to contest our claim. Some of them put their views on this blog while some others sent mails and even told their views in no uncertain terms to me personally. This made us think that probably the way we put forward our opinion was ambiguous. We rephrase it in this editorial. When we say directories are past their prime, we talk about the hundreds and thousands of directories whose main purpose of existence is to sell a few links to unsuspecting webmasters. These ‘past their prime’ directories take no effort that their directories will be useful to people looking for information. To make it more clear, we are not talking about directories like Yahoo, Alive or DirJournal.
These directories are different. They spend time, money and resources on ensuring that their directories provide value addition to the users. They continuously expend effort to ensure that the listings are always up to date and relevant. In short these directories have the drive to be the best.
Directories like DirJournal are not only directories with links but are mini advisors to the users. Not only do you find website listings on this directory but also related news items and other articles. So, if as an user, you are looking for something then not only can DirJournal give you information on relevant sites but also some relevant information itself.
To reiterate, when we said directories are past their prime, we were not talking about directories like DirJournal which no doubt will survive and thrive because it provides value to its users as well as patrons.
As usualy your views and opinions count and are always welcome.

I have to agree. The days are gone when you could just throw up a few directories and make a nice living selling links. Most directories are worthless and have very little qualified traffic.
