Secrets of a successful directory - Part 5
Marketing & Advertising, Monetize March 16th, 2007In this series of articles, we have looked at how to build and monetize a directory site effectively. In this short write up, we look at some of the ways to promote your directory.
Firstly, it is extremely important to find out what seperates your directory from the other ones on the internet. If you are running a general directory, how is it different from the thousands of other ones in the market? What extra benefit does the webmaster get when he submits to yours? List out these points. These will be the USP of your site. Whenever you promote your directory, ensure that your USP is given prominence.
Next, exchange links with other directories. These could be featured/sponsored links or normal links. Exchanging links will help to get your site indexed reasonably quickly in search engines.
Check with other directory owners if your link can be added on their directory submission form. This will help you to target webmaster looking for places to submit their site.
Another very effective and free way to promote your directory is to announce it in webmaster forums. Forums like DigitalPoint and NamePros are visited by thousands of webmasters everyday and quite a few of them are looking for quality directories.
Buying links and other types of ad spaces are options that you may look into if your budget permits. Try to opt for a trial period of a week or two to see how successful the campaign is. Also getting some reviews published on good webmaster blogs can do a lot of good to an upcoming directory.
And finally, as we have kept saying, think out-of-the-box. There is no such thing more successful than an unique and new idea!
