Domain name evaluation or domain name appraisal as it is more popularly known is the process of assessing a domains worth. This is useful if you plan to buy or sell a domain.

There are literally hundreds of appraisers on the internet today. Some charge as low as $5 per appraisal while there are others that charge more than $50 per appraisal. Search for domain name appraisal on google and see the results.

While domain name appraisal may give you a fair idea about the value of a domain name, they are by no means 100% accurate. You can only use them as a approximate benchmark. In the end a domain name is only worth as much as a buyer is willing to pay for it.

Most appraisers valuate a domain based on certain factors. They calculate the worth based on a weighted calculation of each of these factors. Some of these factors are:

      ·        Extension of the domain name, i.e., com, net, org, info etc

·        Length of the domain name – the shorter the better

·        The number of words in the domain name

·        Use of cryptic characters, eg., 2 for ‘to’ or 4 for ‘for’

·        Use of  ‘-‘ in the domain name

·        The domain name being a recognised brand

·        The recollectibility of the domain name

Based on the above factors, most domain name appraisers will appraise a domain. They will also add their own subjective rating to the above. This final factor is based purely on the experience of the appraiser.
